[ Jo Stockham ]
Jo Stockham is an artist who makes work in a wide variety of media, often in response to a site, historical fact, word or image. The images they use are both found and made and often exist in a group of other images, materials or objects to form constellations from which stories unfold. An interest in materials and technologies and their impact on our environment and social relations has been a constant theme.
Jo has been at Chisenhale since 1983 and initiated (along with Jon George) the first education project which involved 9 local primary schools building a giant map of Tower Hamlets in what is now Chisenhale Gallery. Alongside other artist members, she worked to build Chisenhale Gallery and the education space. Working in primary schools, gallery education, teaching BA, MA and PhD students and giving talks to non-specialist audiences, Jo has a strong belief in the power of art to enable conversation about complexity, difference and wonder.
Jo is currently Professor and Head of MA Print at The Royal College of Art and Design, London.
Solo exhibitions include: Matts Gallery, Dilston Grove, The Showroom, Camden Arts Centre in London; Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, The Mead Gallery, Warwickshire and Arnolfini Bristol. She has also shown at 10-year intervals at the Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool.
Research residences include the Ampersand Research Fellowship at the British School in Rome (2022), Red Mansion Beijing (2021) Yaddo (2001) and Warwick University 1995. In 1989, she was a Henry Moore Fellow at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
